Back Home and Worried

First let me start off by saying we're home!!! Well kind of, let me explain. Since I'm on all these meds for my blood pressure and to prevent me from having a seizure we are staying at my parents house. Since the baby came so early hubs was only able to take a short time off. My doctor said I needed help during this time so we are staying with my parents for a few weeks until I get off these meds because hubs works long 12-16 hr shifts and I can't be at home by myself for that long. I never imagined any of this would happen, but I'm taking it in stride. As for these meds it's a task in itself. They make me sleepy and weak. I can't breast feed while on them so I've been pumping and dumping to keep my supply up for when I can.

Which brings me to my worrying, I'm scared that once I'm off the meds he won't latch on and I'll have to exclusively pump. I so want to have that connection of him latching on and plus it would be a lot less work. I hate that I have to supplement with formula, it makes me soo upset because I think the longer he's eating it the worse my chances are for him wanting my milk. I do plan on doing a recap of the events leading up to my delivery, but bare with me, I'm adjusting to being a new mommy, I'm having health complications that I'm trying to work out and I had a baby come 5 wks early so I'm trying to play catch up. I will say my support system has been awesome. If you have any advice/words of encouragement/ articles/ links or whatever concerning delayed breastfeeding that would be great. I also want to point out that my sentence structure, grammar and whatever else is probably funky lol due to the meds and lack of sleep.

However one thing is certain when I look at this face it's SOO worth it!!!

  1. I'm so happy to hear that you're out of the hospital and that you're doing your best to keep your milk supply going. Just take one thing at a time and know that you are doing your best! What kind of bottles are you using? I was told that the Breastflow bottles from The First Years were the closest in flow to the breast.

As for establishing a latch once you're off the meds, definitely see a lactation consultant to get things going. It will be difficult at first because it will be a new thing for your little man, and he has to work a little harder to get the milk to come out. But stick with it and it will SO be worth it. I also recommend visiting the forums on kellymom.com. They are extremely supportive and will be able to offer great advise for starting delayed breastfeeding.

You're in my prayers for a speedy recovery! Congrats again, he's beautiful!

  5. Oh girlie! I'm so sorry you are having to go through all of this. You are so brave. I don't have any helpful advice to give on breast feeding delay but I will say that there is nothing like a great and stable support system. Cherish them! Get well soon!

  6. Hey Kelly, a friend of mine had a similar situation and she is a RN-peds/newborn nursery. She advises to use the playtex natural latch bottles and nipples until you can start putting him on your breast. Keep on pumping and dumping to keep your milk supply up.If you notice a decrease in your milk supply take fenugreek it's an herb that increases your supply it all natural. But if you are on any meds consult with your MD first before taking them. There is also a relatively new bottle out that is supposed to be great to decrease nipple confusion it's called the adiri nurser by baby geek. I personally don't know anyone that has used these but I have heard good things. They are a little pricey. An electronic breast pump is going to be the best. I know that MANDELA is a great brand. She advised against manual pumps and hand expressing. There is also a hands free breast pump by simply wishes. Although hand expression is good to get the baby to latch on initially when you first start. Squeeze some milk on your nipple and then put him to the breast. They also have a breast nipple shield that you can use initially to get him to latch on. My friend had to use it with her first son and it worked miracles. There is also a bra that you can purchase that has a milk container where you can put the formula in the bra and feed. To simulate breastfeeding. I don't know if I would buy that considering you will be nursing soon but I thought I would throw it out there. I hope at least one of these suggestions will be useful to you. BE patient he will do it but if you are anxious your baby will sense it. It will all be fine. He is healthy and home and that is a BLESSING! Enjoy your baby and I will pray for a speedy recovery for you. If they had you on Mag sulfate I know you feel bad...sorry! I work in OB and I am so glad that you a being persisent about breastfeeding your baby! I wish more moms were like you! You ROCK!
